Planting Canna Lilies
- Plant in spring after the last frost.
- If you cannot plant your bulbs and perennials right away, store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement.
- Plant in the garden when soil temperature reaches 16 °C (60 °F) or more.
- Plant rhizome flat in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 10 cm (4 in) deep and 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 in) apart.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
- Soil should be rich and contain organic material such as chopped leaves.
Growing Canna Lilies
- These bulbs are great for borders.
- Plant in groups which then appear more natural.
- Cannas are heavy feeders because of their rapid growth so a timed-release fertilizer works well.
- Do not plant too close to the house to allow for proper growth.
Care Canna Lilies
- Keep the plants moist but not soggy and feed regularly.
- Remove faded flowers promptly for continuous blooming.
Winterizing Canna Lilies
- Hardy in zones 7 to 10, elsewhere lift or protectover winter.
- After first fall frost has blackened the foliage,or the foliage begins to wither, cut stems backto 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in). Lift the bulbs: gentlydig up bulb and allow to dry off.
- Store in slightly moistened vermiculite or peatmoss in a cool 5 °C to 10 °C (40 °F to 50 °F) location.
