This strategic planting allows for minimal maintenance and maximum enjoyment of spring’s natural beauty.
Tulips, known for their striking beauty and vibrant colour have captured hearts worldwide. The show-stopping blooms are a go-to choice for gardens, bouquets, and more. Narcissus (Daffodils), the time-honoured early spring bloomers, are incredibly easy to grow, and nearly pest-resistant making them a favourite garden addition. With a diverse range of colours and shapes, from classic trumpet to showy doubles, Daffodils are remarkably adaptable.
Crocus, spring’s early risers, are enduring favourites. Their vibrant, cup-shaped blossoms are not only low-maintenance but also naturalize for gardens that provide year-after-year beauty. These low-growers thrive in the gentle shade beneath trees and shrubs.
Hyacinths are a fragrant delight in the garden. These flowering beauties showcase a rich colour palette of star-shaped florets, from serene blues, majestic purples to pure whites, raspberry reds, and delicate pinks, all densely packed along sturdy stems.
Amongst spring-flowering bulbs, the choices extend far beyond the well-known and beloved Tulips and Daffodils. Lesser-known varieties hold their own unique charm and splendor, waiting to captivate garden enthusiasts.
Fall, before the ground freezes. Each guide gives its own timing.
It varies by bulb. Tulips go 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) deep and 10 cm (4 in) apart. Narcissus go 15 cm (6 in) deep and 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) apart. Crocus go 8 cm (3 in) deep and 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) apart.
Alliums, Hyacinthus, Muscari, Narcissus, Nectaroscordum and Leucojum are all noted as deer resistant. Fritillaria Imperialis is deer and rodent resistant and will also keep rodents away from other bulbs planted around it.
Crocus and Narcissus naturalize well and return reliably. Most tulips should be treated as annuals, though some Fosteriana, Greigii and species tulips are suitable for naturalizing.
Store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement, until you are ready to plant.
