Planting Fritillaria Imperialis
- Plant these bulbs in fall.
- These bulbs typically have a hole in the top centre where last year’s stem grew. This looks odd but is perfectly normal.
- It is best to plant this bulb on its side - this prevents water collecting at the top of the bulb and causing it to rot.
- Plant in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 20 cm (8 in) deep and 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 in) apart.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Growing Fritillaria Imperialis
- These bulbs do best in well-drained soil.
- Fritillaria do best when the bulbs are left undisturbed for long periods of time. For this reason they are not recommended for containers.
- Water as needed during active growth periods.
Care Fritillaria Imperialis
- Fritillaria are deer and rodent resistant and will also keep rodents away from bulbs planted around.
- When in bloom, feel free to cut some flowers for bouquets. The flowers can be picked without damaging the plant.
Winterizing Fritillaria Imperialis
- After flowering, the leaves should be allowed to die down. The leaves will gather sunlight and provide nourishment for next year’s show.
- These bulbs come back for several years.
