Planting Hyacinthus
- Plant these bulbs in fall.
- These bulbs require a well-drained soil. If they must be planted in heavy soil, it would be a good idea to mix some sharp sand into the soil.
- Plant them with the pointy end up in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 15 cm (6 in) deep and 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) apart.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
- Hyacinths bulbs can cause skin irritation, therefore wash your hands after planting.
Growing Hyacinthus
- Close placement to the house allows you to enjoy the fragrant aroma from the bulbs inside the house as well as in the garden.
- These bulbs are great for containers and can be used for indoor forcing.
Care Hyacinthus
- These bulbs are deer resistant and work great in areas where deer or rodents are a problem.
- Fertilize just before they start blooming.
- Pick some flowers for a bouquet and enjoy the beautiful fragrance.
- Remove the flowers when they are spent. Otherwise the plant will divert energy from building up the bulb, which is necessary for next year’s display.
Winterizing Hyacinthus
- After flowering, the leaves should be allowed to die down. The leaves will gather sunlight and provide nourishment for next year’s show.
- These bulbs come back for several years.
